You’ve been injured in a collision, but how hurt are you really?

The best person to evaluate your well-being is your family physician. TIP: Get them to help you fill in your Section B forms, not your physiotherapist or chiropractor.

There are a lot of different people that may (or may not) be able to help you recover, and they might even be people who you trust more and see more than your doctor. You can see Physiotherapists, Chiropractors, Massage Therapists, Acupuncturists, Naturopaths, Homeopaths, or even Personal Trainers.

BUT, you should go and see these people after you see your family physician, and hopefully on the recommendation of your family physician.

That MD hanging on their wall gives them credibility for the courts, and for the insurance companies. If you want to be properly compensated for your injuries, you must get the opinion of a medical doctor who sees you frequently.

That said, medical doctors are somewhat limited in the actual treatment they provide. That’s why they may refer you for treatment with, for example, physiotherapists. Follow their recommendations!

Your family physician tends to be more objective, and more hesitant to declare you as “recovered” or as “good as it gets” until they are absolutely sure. They have a duty to take good notes and ensure you receive proper health care. Your personal trainer, on the other hand, might not keep good notes, and might exaggerate your improvement so that they look better too.

Even though your personal trainer might do far more to help you recover from an injury than your medical doctor, only the opinion of the medical doctor will carry adequate to insure you are properly compensated for the full extent of your injuries.
