*Editor Note: Both Tom and Brian have contributed the next two posts on tips you can select the right lawyer for your need. Here is Tom’s submission. *

Whenever you hire a lawyer, hire one who has been referred by someone you trust or hire one with whom you’ve spoken and you believe can work with you. None of us need to be talked down to and all of us need to feel as if we are being respected.

Once you find a lawyer who leaves you feeling as if you can work with him or her, find out whether they are well versed in the area of law you need them to work in. There is nothing worse than hiring a family lawyer to do a real estate deal or a criminal lawyer to do your divorce.

Often, your lawyer may need to work out the structure of your deal with the “other lawyer”. Make sure that yours has the ability to do so and that he or she has the respect of the other lawyers in that particular field of law.

How can you do all of this checking in, say, a real estate deal? Rely upon a referral from your realtor, a family member or friend who has been there before. Use the web to check out any reviews. Get on the telephone and talk to the lawyer. You’ll quickly find out whether he or she wants your business.
