Having a family doctor is very important if you have been injured in a slip and fall or motor vehicle accident. Even though the family doctor is not the one that will be ‘treating’ your injuries on a day-to-day or regular basis, their opinion will be very important in negotiations with the insurer for the responsible party (or to judge if your matter does not settle after negotiations).
If you don’t have a family doctor, speak to friends and family and see if their doctor will take you on as a new patient. If you still have difficulties, your lawyer may be able to assist you in finding a family doctor who is taking on new patients.
I often tell clients that it is very important to ‘educate’ their family doctor; what I mean by that is that you should go in prepared to every meeting with your family doctor and provide a list of everyday functions that are difficult to do as a result of your injuries. Be specific and detailed. The more information you give your family doctor the better able he/she will be able to diagnose your injuries and the more likely it is that he/she will adequately ‘chart’ your injuries, treatment and progress.
