If you’ve been in a car accident, you are entitled to certain insurance benefits from your own insurer, regardless of who was at fault. These benefits are often called ‘Section B benefits’. They are called that because by law every car insurance policy in Alberta has to have these benefits and they are always in ‘Section B’ of the policy. If you are injured, your own (or your driver’s, in the case where you were a passenger) insurance company will likely tell you that you they will only ‘authorize’ 21 treatments (physiotherapy, chiropractic or massage). They may try to imply that you are limited to that number of treatments. You are not.

The reality is that you are entitled to get however many treatments deemed medically essential by your treating physician (family doctor). Your insurance company has to reimburse you for the cost of those treatments. The only limitations on the amount of treatment is : chiropractic ($750), massage ($250) and acupuncture ($250). You are also entitled to claim for loss of income from your own insurance company if you have been off work for at least a week.
